With Token as its Headline Partner, this November the Open Banking Expo UK brought together over 500 members of the open banking and open finance communities to share the latest industry insights and developments.
On the heels of a 295% increase in successful open payments in the UK in the past year, account-to-account payments emerged as the most promising open banking opportunity — and the hot topic of the day.
Following an engaging debate on the state of the open finance ecosystem, Token CEO Todd Clyde opened the Expo with his main stage keynote address, “Driving the shift: Open Banking payments in high gear.” Todd examined just how far the open banking industry has come, from 2018 when the debate was whether PSD2 was an opportunity or threat for banks, to 2019 when data took centre stage, to today which sees open payments set to move to the mainstream.
Todd Clyde went on to share that in September alone, the UK’s CMA9 saw 2.3 million open payments transactions, and year to date Token has driven 28% of all growth to the CMA9, delivering over €13.9 million in estimated savings for merchants across over 10 million annualised transactions. And, while headwinds remain around API stability, consumer protection, and the ubiquity of real-time payments, emerging tailwinds in the form of Variable Recurring Payments and the bundling of new services around account-to-account payments will drive new inflection points.
The open payments buzz continued during a panel debate moderated by Todd Clyde that brought together expert open payments practitioners from Amex (Head of Pay with Bank Transfer Holly Coventry), Global Payments (Digital & Unified Commerce Solutions Product Manager Ketan Thanki), Vyne (Chief Revenue Officer Luke Flomo), Banked (Chief Revenue Officer Tim Renew) and ClearBank (Head of Product Hayley Viner) to discuss their live open payments use cases, and what associated challenges and opportunities they see on the horizon.
Meanwhile, on the exhibition floor, hundreds of Expo attendees bumped elbows and caught up at Token’s booth, where visitors took home our magazine, Driving the Shift, featuring the latest in account-to-account payments insights and case studies.
