Token.io signs Memorandum of Understanding to support the introduction of the EUDI Wallet in Germany
BERLIN, 29 September 2026 — Token.io, the leading Pay by Bank infrastructure provider in the UK and Europe, has signed Bitkom's Memorandum of Understanding with the German Federal Ministry for Digital and State Modernisation (BMDS), alongside over 120 companies, to support the successful introduction of the European Digital Identity Wallet (EUDI Wallet) in Germany.
The EUDI Wallet marks a significant step toward trusted, interoperable digital identity in Europe. Under the eIDAS 2.0 regulation, EU member states are required to make at least one compliant wallet available to citizens by the end of 2026. The Bitkom MoU brings together businesses and public bodies committed to making the wallet practical and widely adopted.
Token.io sees particular potential at the intersection of digital identity and Pay by Bank, where verified credentials can complement payment flows, streamline onboarding, and improve checkout experiences for consumers and businesses alike.
The signing is the latest in a series of steps by Token.io to shape the standards and schemes that will define the future of payments in Europe. In 2025, Token.io became the first third-party provider (TPP) admitted to the giroAPI scheme, Germany's framework for next-generation account-to-account payment services. This year, Token.io co-led the launch of the new ETPPA German chapter, bringing together TPPs operating in the country under a unified voice. Gideon Fourie, Managing Director of Token Europe, was also appointed to the Berlin Group openFinance Advisory Board, which guides the strategic direction of open finance standards across the continent. Token.io is also a co-founder of the UK Payments Initiative, the first new UK payment scheme in 20 years.
Gideon Fourie, Managing Director of Token Europe, commented: "We welcome the opportunity to engage with businesses and public bodies on making the EUDI Wallet practical, useful, and interoperable. As an active contributor to European payments standards, we are well placed to bring a perspective informed by deep experience in building payments infrastructure at scale."
